CISD Early Literacy

  • CISD Early Literacy model includes the following components:

    • Researched based early literacy education by trained, caring educators in the regular classroom,
    • On-going assessment throughout the school year to monitor each student's literacy development,
    • Intensive, focused literacy instruction given by campus literacy teachers to students identified by assessment as needing additional literacy support,
    • Ongoing professional development for teachers to keep current on best classroom practices, differentiate and provide quality literacy instruction.

Primary teachers provide a balanced literacy approach blending daily observational assessments with classroom practices to promote literacy learning. Areas of focus include:
    • Beginning reading skills
    • Concepts about print
    • Vocabulary development
    • Listening and reading comprehension
    • Phonemic awareness and phonics
    • Reading fluency
    • Development of writing skills.

Students learn by actively exploring different types of texts, and focused instruction in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing as determined by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Developing good communication, thinking, and problem-solving skills is an on-going goal of CISD's early literacy program. Learning to communicate and express one's ideas, read and interpret different types of text, and develop effective writing skills are all skills that will ensure not only success in the classroom but in life.

CISD's goal is for all students to develop a love of language and become literate adults with excellent critical thinking skills.
