Seeking Input on Naming New Campuses

  • To address current and future growth within Coppell ISD (as outlined here,) the 2016 Coppell ISD Bond called for several new construction projects. These include a new 9th grade campus at the current site of Coppell Middle School West and new construction of a middle school campus to replace West, both of which will open for the 2018-2019 school year.  A District Naming Committee —  consisting of community members, staff, parents and students — was formed to provide recommendations to the Board of Trustees on the names of the new campuses.

The committee decided to continue to name secondary schools (6th – 12th grades) after geographic areas or specific programs (such as New Tech High @ Coppell) and not after people, which currently is only typical of our elementary schools. The last elementary school named after an individual was W. H. Wilson Elementary in 1992. The Committee has recommended two naming options for the new middle school and 9th grade campus. Coppell ISD is seeking community input on these name options.

New Middle School

  • New Middle School
The following options are listed in alphabetical order and not by priority of the committee. The two options being considered for the new middle school are:

    Arrow2  Coppell Middle School South
    Arrow2  Coppell Middle School West

    Background:
CMS South: The new middle school is in the southern portion of Coppell ISD.

CMS West has been the name of the current campus for the past 25 years, and the committee felt it has an existing brand and name recognition within the district. It also is not uncommon for a facility to retain its name when it is rebuilt on a different location.

9th Grade Campus

  • 9th Grade Campus
The following options are listed in alphabetical order and not by priority of the committee. The two options being considered for the new 9th grade campus are:

    Arrow2  Coppell High School Freshman
          Campus
Arrow2  Coppell High School Ninth Grade
          Campus (CHS9)

    Background:
The committee was very respectful of the history of the district, wanting to preserve that history for future generations. The primary goal was to promote unity. The committee felt strongly that Coppell High School should be included in the new name, as it will be an off shoot of the Coppell High School campus. Keeping CHS in the name would assist with branding and keeping unity between the ninth grade campus and the 10-12 grades housed at CHS.
