    Congratulations to "The Undecideds" STEM team from Coppell Middle School North featured in this week’s Spotlight. Team members Quinlan Day, Falak Shah, Neil Kondapalli, and Eda Kim not only successfully completed the 2016 Flour Global Engineering Marble Machine Design Challenge (with over 600 entries!) and made Fluor’s list of Top 10 schools, they earned a “Big Check” for their school!

    Congratulations to Coppell High School artists Erin & Nicole Crumpler, Morgan Glover, Megha Goyal, Katy Yut, Mahir Morar, and Eunice Choe. Nine of their works of art were selected as finalists in the 2016 Congressional Show for Congressman Kenny Merchant.

    Hats off to the 7 DECA team members representing New Tech High @ Coppell at the annual International Competition recently held in Nashville, TN. Madison Traver was recognized as the top performer/role play in the Hotel & Lodging Individual Series Event. Taylor Clark, Jacob Gonzales, and Kara Peterson advanced to the finals with their year-long Public Relations Campaign gaining them Top 10 recognition worldwide in the Public Relations Project Event.

    Growth in Coppell ISD was evidenced this week when enrollment hit the 12,000th student mark! Join Dr. Waldrip and the CISD staff as we welcome Valley Ranch First Grader, Bhanu Gouru, to the U.S. and to her new school home.

    Sixteen of our Coppell Choir members performed last week with Eric Whitacre and the Dallas Wind Symphony at the Meyerson Symphony Center.     Chris Nester  
    Kudos to Wilson Elementary Principal, Mr. Chris Nester, for his recent recognition by the Texas Library Association (TLA) – Texas Association for School Librarians. Mr. Nester was named the school library administrator of the year and will receive his award - “The Distinguished Library Service Award for School Administrators” during an awards ceremony at the TLA conference this April in Houston.

     
    ACDEC State  
    The Academic Decathlon team from CHS finished in Second Place last weekend at the UIL State Championship AcDec tournament. The team scored the highest score in school history. All nine team members earned $800 each for their Second Place finish and qualified to compete in the Online E-Nationals against 40 other teams in the US. Daniel Koh, Shashwath Murthy, Ashray Gautam, Matthew Smith, Federica Ferrari, and Taddie Cook had notable performances!

    Artworks created by two middle school artists from Coppell ISD will hang in Austin/in the Capitol Rotunda during Youth Art Month- this March. Ananya Pagadala/Coppell Middle School East, and Sarah Bayanmunkh/Coppell Middle School West were both honored by the Board of Trustees during the February Regular School Board Meeting.

    Congratulations to the winners in the 22nd Annual Young Master’s Exhibition. These CHS student artists were recognized at the February 15 Board Meeting Julie Choi (Monsters in the World of Dreams), Allison Li (Passing Tranquility), Kimberly McDonald (Routine), Taylor Stiff (Toxic Stilettos), and Katy Yut (Global Warming) all under the direction of Tamera Westervelt. The public is invited to view all chosen artworks at the DMA in the Concourse Gallery from February 27 - April 17.

    Scott Mason  
    Scott Mason, Coppell High School Head Band Director, is one of only 270 directors to be inducted into the prestigious Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame. Sponsored by Phi Beta Mu (Alpha Chapter), the International School Bandmaster Fraternity works diligently to provide various awards and services to fellow music educators, and this honor is one of the most prestigious. Mr. Mason received the award over the Winter Break in front of a packed house of current and former students, parents, and co-workers. Mr. Mason was again recognized for this accomplishment during the Regular CISD School Board Meeting on January 11. Scott, who joined the Coppell ISD 24 years ago, has touched hundreds of lives throughout his tenure and has grown the band program to be a leader in Texas.

     
    Spelling Bee
    Coppell ISD’s 2016 Spelling Bee winner is four-time champion- Smrithi Upadhyayula, an aspiring writer and 8th grade learner from Coppell Middle School West. Her winning word? “Osteogenous” (defn. - formation of bone)! This marks the fourth consecutive year Smrithi has won the district title - last year’s efforts took her all the way to the semi-final round of the National Spelling Bee. Raj Papineni- a 6th grader at Coppell Middle School East - is also to be commended as this year’s runner-up. Great job and good luck at the Dallas County Bee on Feb. 18!

    Denton Creek fourth grader, Shraavya Pydisetti, is CISD’s artist in residence for the district’s 2015 holiday greeting card. Shraavya is under the direction of art teacher Nancy Neergaard and will be recognized during this month’s Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees. Submissions are received from elementary learners across the district, and this year’s runners-up (rounding out the district’s top four) and their art educators include Mallory Moore/Wilson Elementary 5th Grader and her art instructor Alejandra Quinonez; Macy Baume/Cottonwood Creek 5th Grader and her art teacher Lynda Harris; and Luke Garza/Town Center Elementary 5th Grader under the direction of art educator Laci Garza. Join us in commending Shraavya and all of these talented artists for their creativity and support of the fine arts.
