Last updated 2/1/22
The district will continue monitoring the pandemic and will adjust protocols to ensure the safety of our students and staff while complying with the legal parameters the district must follow. Coppell ISD will continue to provide a safe learning environment for all our students and staff. Since this is an ever-changing situation, CISD may need to make changes to these and other protocols based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Texas Education Agency (TEA) and/or Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS).

Positive COVID-19 Cases
- Parents and employees are required to report confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 to the campus or their supervisor.
- According to state law, a student or staff member having or suspected of having COVID-19 must not come to campuses/buildings. The student or staff member cannot return until the readmission criteria for COVID-19 is met, which is:
- Students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 should isolate for 5 days and if they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are resolving (without fever for 24 hours), follow that by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others.
- If symptomatic, exclude until at least 10 days have passed since symptom onset, and fever free*, and other symptoms have improved. *Fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever suppressing medications. Fever is a temperature of 100° Fahrenheit (37.8° Celsius) or higher.
- As a way to notify our community and keep them informed, CISD will maintain a COVID-19 dashboard. This will include a summary of the most recent student positive cases by campus and grade level that were reported to the district. The dashboard will also include staff cases by campus/building.
- Coppell ISD will be contact tracing and quarantining students following CDC and Dallas County Health and Human Services guidelines.
- New CDC guidance (on Jan. 6, 2022) for K-12 schools has reduced the recommended time for isolation and quarantine periods to five days. For details see CDC’s page on Quarantine and Isolation.
- Campus nurses and the district Nurse Coordinator will report positive student and staff cases to DCHHS and TEA. The TEA reports, by campus and district-wide, may be viewed at: https://dshs.texas.gov/coronavirus/schools/texas-education-agency.
- All students, staff and visitors who become ill while on campus will be immediately isolated, and the area will be disinfected. Students with possible COVID-19 symptoms at school will be separated from others until their parent/guardian arrives to pick them up. Students should be picked up within 30 minutes of being contacted by the school.
-
Daily Self Screening
- All staff and students are encouraged to self-screen for COVID symptoms and should not come to school if they are ill. It is essential that students and staff not enter campuses or buildings if they are showing symptoms of COVID-19 or any other illness.

Close Contact/Quarantine
CISD recently has updated our close contact and quarantine guidelines based on recommendations and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Texas Education Agency. Per TEA guidelines, school administrators are sending letters to students when a classmate has tested positive for COVID-19. Those who are identified as close contacts will receive a separate notification from a school administrator or school nurse with the quarantine protocols listed below.
Close Contact Definition
As per the CDC, close contacts are defined as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. Except in certain circumstances, people who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 should quarantine.
However, the following people with recent exposure do NOT need to quarantine:- People who have been fully vaccinated.
- People who were previously diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last three months (90-days).
- Someone that is less than 6 feet but greater than 3 feet in distance from a positive person will not need to quarantine, if both individuals are wearing a mask consistently and correctly.
Quarantine Protocols
While both the CDC and Dallas County Health and Human Services recommend that a close contact should quarantine, the TEA allows for parents to opt-out of quarantining a child that was a close contact.- Quarantine: A child should quarantine and stay at home for 10 days from last exposure, except to get essential medical care.
- 10-Day and 7-Day Quarantine Details:
- A child may return to school on day 11 without a COVID-19 test.
- If testing is done between days 5-7, a child that tests negative for COVID-19 may return to school on day 8. Please contact the school nurse and provide a copy of the test results.
- Monitor for symptoms through day 14.
- If symptoms develop, the parent or guardian must call the school nurse and the student must isolate for 10 days.
- Excused Absences: These absences will be excused and a child will have the ability to make up any work when they return. There may be parts of learning a child could access on Schoology, however there is not a virtual learning option. A child will still have access to any learning online resources such as iStation, Dreambox, etc. for their specific grade level.
- Vaccinated students will not need to quarantine.
- Fully vaccinated means two weeks have passed since the second dose was received.
- Please provide the school nurse a copy of your child’s vaccination record or a written statement regarding vaccination status.
- Stay home if symptoms develop and contact the school nurse
Because of federal student privacy laws and medical privacy laws, the district asks that identified close contacts and those in quarantine limit communications about this matter.

Masks and Face Coverings
- At the board meeting on Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, CISD Board of Trustees voted to end the prior temporary mask requirement, which was in effect from Sept. 28 to Oct. 25.
- While masks are highly encouraged, masks or face shields will be optional in Coppell ISD for students, staff and visitors.
- Campuses will work to ensure no person is treated differently as a result of their choice to wear or not wear a mask.
- We will respect each family’s decision regarding the wearing of masks, and we will work together to keep our students and staff healthy.
- Students and staff are encouraged to wear their own mask if they choose, but masks will be available for all students, staff, and visitors upon request in the main office, if needed.

Safety Protocols and Preventative Strategies - Visitors
- Campus visitors must self-assess for COVID symptoms prior to entering a building or facility. Visitors must not enter the building if they are experiencing symptoms.
- CISD will limit visitors on campuses for the first nine weeks of school. Visitors will not be allowed on campus during breakfast or lunch during the first nine weeks. Parents may drop off lunch at the front office or the designated area on campus. While volunteers will be allowed on campus, the number of volunteers will be limited. This protocol will be re-evaluated after the first nine weeks.

The ozone free high-efficiency air filtration units coupled with the germicidal disinfectant will greatly enhance air cleaning.
